about

Ghost Forest Investigators is an upbeat song about an indicator of climate change, with a Scooby Doo vibe and a message about facing your fears. The song started off jazzy, but at the studio Jon Guo started playing the driving bass that you hear on the track. Our producer & drummer on the record, TJ Lipple asked Marsha how fast she could sing it and responded with the energetic, intense drums. We hit record, and the rest is history!

The song idea came when Marsha got to chatting with Keryn Gedan, a mom friend on the playground who happens to be a biology professor studying ghost forests. Ghost forests are areas along the coast all over the world where sea level has risen. The trees can't drink the salt water so their bark falls off, they dry out, turn white and look ghostly -- earning them the name ghost forests. Scientists are hoping to get citizens to report their observations of their local coastline so scientists can better study patterns of sea level rise and figure out how to help. Marsha wanted to get the word out about this important topic in a song while keeping it fun, positive, and not scary for kids. With her message about being brave and shining your light in the darkness, she hopes to inspire others to get in on the action!

lyrics

Ghost Forest Investigators — what’s happening here?
That grayish-white hue makes me think you’ve got ghouls hiding near
When did the tree trunks turn so white?
Did it happen overnight?
Or is it getting close to Halloween?

Well the air smells salty like when you’re at the beach
When you walk in the woods, those waves should be out of reach
The bark fell off, the trunks turned white
The leaves could no longer grow and stay green
Sea level rise — that’s what made this spooky scene

Ghost Forest Investigators — what’s happening here?
That grayish-white hue makes me think you’ve got ghouls hiding near
When did the tree trunks turn so white?
Did it happen overnight?
Or is it getting close to Halloween?

I guess the trees were thirsty, but what could they do?
Not drink that salty water, it’s sad but true
Without some clean clear H2O
The trees could no longer stay lush and green
Sea levels rose and that's what made this spooky scene

In the darkness of the night
You’ll find a way to shine your light
With scary things around
When you’re brave and calm I’ve found
The truth becomes clear
And soon it’ll be alright

Ghost Forest Investigators I know what we can do here
Take climate action, the satisfaction will soon become clear
Prevent erosion of our coasts
Make them less like homes for ghosts
Look out for scary things this Halloween
We can scare the scary things, now scream — BOO
